In the run-up to International Museum Day May 18, the Ministry of Culture organized a news conference to showcase the core values and diverse appeal of domestic museums May 14 in Taipei City.

Prominent attendees included Minister of Culture Li Yuan; Hung Shih-yu, head of the Taiwan Museum Association and director of the National Museum of History in Taipei; Yu Pei-chin, deputy director of the Taipei-headquartered National Palace Museum; and Futuru C.L. Tsai, director of the National Museum of Prehistory in the southeastern county of Taitung, the MOC said.

To explore the future of museums in rapidly changing communities, this year’s museum day theme, nine institutions, including NPM and NMH, presented the fruitful results of integrating virtual reality, digital games and immersive technology into exhibitions, transforming classic collections into accessible and easily digestible content.

According to Hung, other areas of focus included increasing exchanges between museums and communities, transforming museums into creative outlets for young people and preserving culture through digital technology.

Echoing Hung’s remarks, Li said that this year’s event places particular emphasis on encouraging youth participation, adding that discounts will be offered May 17-18 to young visitors who purchase tickets or cultural or creative products using MOC-issued cultural points. The minister added that the promotion is just the beginning, with more cultural point-related projects in the works.

During the event, Li also presented certificates to NPM and NMP, recognizing the former for its commitment to developing digital exhibitions and expanding global cooperation and the latter for its incorporation of archaeology, ethnology and other disciplines into exhibits, the ministry said.
